The old stories are the best
Or so they told me
Pass them on
Pass them on
But the thing about stories
Is that they are not always real
And fiction can become fact
And fact becomes truth
And truth
Becomes law
Like the one about Nemo
You know the story
A clownfish
Gets lost
Or rather, caught by a diver
And his dad, Marlin, sets out to find him
With the help of a blue reef fish
Dory
Well, this story
About Marlin and his son
Is a brilliant one
With the sharks and the jellyfish
And all the adventures
But some things are wrong
Well, OK, it’s a story
And it’s all made up
I get that
I love stories
But the bit that is wrong
Is that clownfish
Are not as fixed in their genders
As this story implies
All clownfish are born male
But they can change into females
Which sounds kind of cool
But a little bit complicated
Nemo, a boy fish
Is found by his dad
Another boy fish
Who, the scientists tell me
Would have transformed to a girl fish,
A mum
After the death of his partner
Which sounds kind of cool
But a little bit complicated
Too complicated
For Pixar or Disney
Too much for the storytellers
Who like to make things easy
And simple
So we have boys and girls
Princes and princesses
Heroes and villains
Black and white
Everything simple
Everything binary
The old stories are the best
Or so they told me
Pass them on
But the thing about stories
Is that they are not always real
And fiction can become fact
And fact becomes truth
And truth
Becomes law
You know what I’m talking about
It’s time to tell new stories
Pass it on
